Spring has sprung for the Nissan Leaf sales in March, expected to break a monthly sales record.

According to Autoblog Green, during a recent session at the New York Auto Show, Nissan senior vice president of sales and marketing for the US and Canada Jose Munoz said the company should reach over 1,900 Leafs sold for March.

Chip in a few dollars a month to help support independent cleantech coverage that helps to accelerate the cleantech revolution!

If those numbers stay true, it would easily smash last month’s sales figures of 653 units, and surpass 579 on a year over year basis from March, 2012. And it would end up breaking the company’s previous record of 1,708 in June, 2011.

With the new plant in Smyrna, Tennessee now shipping Leafs, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn says that they are providing big financial savings, cutting the cost by $6,000.

So what are some other reasons the Nissan Leaf sales might continue to climb in the future?

For one, Nissan has a slick marketing campaign to get younger people to buy the Leaf. We reported early in March about its latest advertisement, showcasing a young couple driving a Leaf on a date and showcasing the benefits of the LeafLink mobile app. Good marketing, while not necessarily essential, is important.

Reason number two, and more important than the first: increased charging infrastructure. It’s nice to have more EVs on the road. However, at the end of the day, its charging stations that will help make the transition from fossil fueled to cleaner vehicles. Nissan in February announced it plans to add an extra 500 quick charging stations across the US over the next year and a half. Consumers, once they see the additional stations, may decide to plunk their hard-earned cash for the Leaf as a viable driving alternative compared to other cars.

Will April sales for the Leaf continue to rise, or fall? We shall wait and see by the end of next month. But expect more record-breaking monthly sales in the future.
