our grid isn’t perfect yet, but the vehicles themselves are indeed zero emissions. and even with the grid we have today (and assuming owners aren’t charging with their own solar panels), they are much cleaner than than conventional cars: http://cleantechnica.com/2012/04/18/electric-vehicles-greenhouse-gas-emissions-save-money/

Imagine if power companies had invested in clean tech in the seventies instead of resisting it..With the high level of engineering we had back then due to the space race, we could have remained a global leader and would be a lot more comfortable right now.. Even if you hadn’t been born yet.

Might I adjust this a bit? How about –

The solution to the energy problem is like a machine which works better and better as each new part is installed.

Evidence? We have cut electricity production using coal from over 50% to 36% in the US. We have increased average vehicle gas mileage. We have reduced the use of heating oil by 40%. We have grown wind generation to where it is supplying 3.5% of our electricity.

We peaked our CO2 emissions in 2005 and have fallen a little bit since then.
New parts are making the old beast run a bit better. Time to put more new ones in place at a higher rate.

We could even use the puzzle analogy. We’ve put only a few pieces in place and we can already start to tell what the finished picture might look like.

Yes, and fortunately, solar, wind, and electric cars tend to compliment each other nicely.

Electric cars have batteries, wind turbines need energy storage, etc.

The solution to the energy problem is like a puzzle or machine which cannot work until all the parts are in place.

Electric vehicles, solar panels, and wind turbines, are 3 of the parts.

Electric vehicles need wind turbines, etc.

The larger issue here is that most of the “clean” electricity that runs those handsome electric cars is NOT clean. With the bulk of it still being produces with coal and NG there is still that “exhaust” hidden in the background. It is, however, a step in the right direction.
