Toyota November Tops US Electric Plug In Vehicle Sales For November
Toyota jumped ahead of the electric vehicle pack for sales in November, while the Nissan Leaf climbed above the Chevy Volt.
A total of 1,766 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid’s were sold last month, according to Green Car Congress. Year-to-date sales for the Prius PHEV in 2012 were at 11,389 units at the end of the month.
Meanwhile, Nissan’s Leaf gained some traction in US sales. It finished second, with 1,539 vehicles sold, a 129% increase from November 2011. This is the first time the Leaf has outsold the Volt since January. However, January to November sales for the Leaf moved slightly southward compared to January 2011 to November 2011 sales, by 4.5%. It had sold 8,330 vehicles through November 2012, down from 8,720 units leaving car outlets in the same period last year.

Toyota and Nissan’s November gains meant the Chevy Volt finished third. It landed 1,519 vehicle sales (up 33.4% from November 2011). Despite the Volt finishing third in November US sales, it’s been a decent year for Volt sales, up a whopping 239.1% between January to November. It sold 20,828 vehicles in that time period, compared to 6,142 cars in the same period in 2011.
Meanwhile, Ford’s C-Max Energi Plug-in Hybrid sold 1,259 units in November (and a total of 1,403 units since the car went on sale in October).
And 172 Ford Focus Electrics (the total through November was 518). Here are some more, interesting numbers from Green Car Congress:
In total, Ford sold 4,848 C-MAX models in the US in November, 74% of them the regular C-MAX hybrid, 26% of them the Energi plug-in hybrid variant. (In November, Toyota’s Prius PHV accounted for 10.7% of total sales of the Prius family.)
Sales of the C-MAX hybrid increased 18% from the October results of 3,038 units. Total C-MAX (hybrid and PHEV) sales through November are 8,999 units. Sales of other Ford car hybrid models were:
- Fusion: 1,834
- Lincoln MKZ: 282
Next year’s plug-in electric vehicle competition should get a lot more interesting, with the Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid and other plug-in vehicles entering the market, and with the market more mature overall.
