Cargo Container Batteries To Power Orkney Islands Grid
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is working together with the Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE plc) in a demonstration project that will see large cargo container-type energy storage systems attached to the Orkney Islands grid, home to a high proportion of renewable energy generation in relation to demand.
The energy storage system is made up of two 40-foot-long container units housing more than 2,000 units of lithium-ion rechargable batteries, and a third 40-foot-long container for the power conditioning system.
The energy storage system has the capacity to store approximately 800kWh (kilowatt hours) nominal, 500kWh normal usage, and will be installed at the Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution plc (SHEPD) Korkwall Power Station.
In the case of a slight power shortage in the Islands or a power surplus, power is transmitted to and from the mainland through a submarine cable to the energy storage system.

The demonstration project will be conducted with the support of New Energy and Industrial Technology Development organization (NEDO) of Japan, under the programme of “Development of Technology for Safe, Low-cost, Large-size Battery System.”
