With a budget that consumes the best part of a trillion bucks every year the DOD is in an excellent position to be the driving force for the move away from the energy technology of the last century and toward a cleaner, greener, sustainable future.

The expenditure of 1.8 billion over the next dozen years (less than 150mil/year) is hardly a bold commitment to such a critically important transition. That amount should be seen as an embarrassingly timid toe in the water in the face of the enormity of the potential peril we face from our continued gluttonous consumption of fossil fuels.

In light of the DOD's own assessment of climate change as among the gravest of national security threats it would seem that we might spend at least as much as we squander chasing a couple thousand suspected terrorists around the planet or launching drone attacks at every suspicious wedding or funeral procession in the Middle East and South Asia.

This is a good strp in the right direction for the DOD. They just took another step in energy related conservation and efficiency by doing some logistics work on fueling the Naval Fleet with an onboard fuel generating process utilizing sea water and other available materials from day to day life on the Seas. It would not surprise me at all if the Airforce investigates the viability of well crafted synthetic fuels for quality and performance characteristics in the Aviation area.
