Uruguay, along with Chinese automobile manufacturer BYD, CTS Auto S.A., and Buquebus, have signed a contract to bring electric buses to the South American country.

The electric busses are expected to arrive by the end of 2012. The Uruguayan government is targeting to have over 500+ electric buses on the road by 2015.

BYD’s electric buses use iron-phosphate battery technology that is considered very safe and has a long service life, while being environmentally sustainable.

The buses, on a single charge, run for 155 miles (250 kilometres) in city areas, while only using 130 kWh per 100km.

Officials were very excited about the new buses coming to Uruguay.

“I am ready to invest heavily in a natural Uruguay – I will replace my whole tourism bus fleet with new energy buses,” Juan Carlos Lopez Mena, President of Buquebus said in the statement.

Stanley Lin Tang, BYD Senior Business Director, said in the statement: “Uruguay is an important tourism market yet it imports all of its petroleum. Promoting electric vehicles not only contributes to environmental protection and economic recovery, but it also improves Uruguay’s energy security.”
