US lack of leadership on high-speed rail is worse than our lack of leadership on solar and wind power (we are way behind numerous other countries). But the area of the US with the best rail network at the moment, and with the best hope of developing a “high-speed” rail network, is the Northeast. With a little work, that could even spread down the East Coast. Andrew Meggison of Gas2 has an update for us on the progress of high-speed rail on the East Coast:

An East Coast High Speed Rail Network Is In The Works (via Gas 2.0)

While hopes for a high-speed rail line connecting California cities seem to be on life support, New England could be the new home of a high-speed rail line. Even though Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) faces a $161 million budget deficit this year and another $100 million budget deficit…

Why worry about EV range ! Just build the High Speed rail links with “side drive on” (very quick loading) car transport as they did for the England/France tunnel.

Think how much energy would be saved.

There is much more traffic between France and England, and people there are much more dependent on public transportation, not to mention hier gas prices. Here it will not work financially, unless you raise gas prices 3-4 times.

Living on the exact line they are planning on building I can see the ridership being fairly decent.

Anyone in Fairfield county CT takes the metro north quite frequently to NYC. It is much easier than dealing with traffic/driving. And further north in central CT they were considering expanding i-84 but this would have cost multiple times that of improving rail.

The efficiency of rail is much better than building massive multi-lane highways in densely populated regions, resulting in many bottlenecks and delays.
