Going back to your earlier request for comments on how to present stories like this. I think there's some great stories here that I almost missed because they were all together. It is like being a kid in sweetshop.

I avoided a $300,000 hook up fee by going off the grid.

My previous house was about 1/4 mile from the nearest power pole. I installed a solar system for about half the cost of hooking up.

Off-Grid verses On-Grid. A couple numbers that people forget to point out but are easy to find if you look also make off-grid sound even better.
1) The cost of installing the power connect if your house isn't already attached to the grid. Even beeing just 500yrds from the power companys pole is costly when you are charged by the foot.
2) Pull out you electric bill and READ it. Since my power supplier is not my power distributer it is easy to see that 44% of my cost is for bringing the power to my door and 56%.
3) We lose power (<5 mins) normally a couple times a year, worst was after a storm and we lost power for 10 days.
