The authors of the original study have now updated it with a Q & A that can be found at http://www.atmos.albany.edu/facstaff/zhou/tmp/press_release_QA.pdf in it they speculate abouty the cause of the warming and explain that the measurements are of the local ground surface and not global air temperatures (global warming.)

Good Spot. The process here works like this. I send in a post that is then reviewed, edited and published. When I next see the article, I look to see what has been changed. Sometimes it is possible that writer and editor are not on the same wavelength. There was a type of frog or gecko “discovered” on some islands in the Caribean. Local residents objected to the scientific finding as they had known about it for years. Like patents we tend to give credit to the one who files the papers. It is how we have set our priorities.

For many years, produce farms and orchards have been using “wind machines” to bring warmer air down to ground level to prevent frost damage. Seems these folks knew the phenomena well before scientists had their “ah ha” moment. Best to get out of the laboratory and into the field before publishing.
