I don’t think Canada will be foolish enough to build those reactors.

I’ll bet they go for much cheaper wind and solar.

$79 billion in new investment would be enough to build 8 EPRs, netting 21% of Canada’s electricity production, which could all be sited in a few areas instead of littering the countryside with tens of thousands of wind turbines. This is assuming no improvement in scales of efficiency given the number being built in a row. Given China’s experience of building AP1000s one after another and rapidly falling costs, I’d be safe to say $80 B would net a good bit more than just 8 1.6GW reactors.

Ahh. That might explain it – we’ve got a conservative govt. here in NZ and we’re going nowhere either. No offense to Canada, but the Tar Sands projects definitely qualifies as one of the most evil things humanity has ever done.

The Canadian government sadly, is Conservative. But the Ontario government is Liberal. It is the Liberals who have embraced clean energy all across the province. Meanwhile the Conservatives are promoting tar sands while cancer rates in those communities are astronomical.

True! That always surprised me. Texas especially. Then try going northeast to traditionally blue state Massachusetts, and you’ll find Cape Wind NIMBYs everywhere!

Yeah, that’s one of the funny things about wind — it has been put in by conservatives. But really, why wouldn’t they support it? In the U.S., the leading wind power states are actually conservative states, and the head of the Wind Energy Association is (or was) a republican.

Canada’s wind growth seems amazing considering that their currently held but what I understand is a rather right-wing government…
