Huh? In 2011, Italy consumed 328 terawatt-hours (TW-h) of electricity. It produced 285 TW-h, including 41 TW-h of wind, solar, and “other renewable” (hydro?). It imported 47 TW-h and exported 2 TW-h.

Wow! That’s alot of money going into foreign hands! From their point of perspective, that’s a big loss, an it probably needs to reduce that figure significantly.

Hopefully the continued acceleration of PV installations will make that metric marginally smaller. 4GW is definitely a huge amount of capacity!

I love the concept of Feed-in Tariffs, and as solar becomes established in a country they’re a fantastic way of giving it that additional boost it needs, but it is true that after a certain point we need to lower them to also demonstrate that solar can survive on its own – which occurs around when it hits grid parity.
