Death of a thousand cuts - that's how we get rid of fossil fuels.

As Petar points out, we are in danger of ruining all pristine areas with our use of fossil fuels. Even the desert ecosystem cannot withstand much higher temperatures without turning into a sterile landscape devoid of plant and animal life.

Geothermal emits only 1 tenth of pollutants into the atmosphere compared to coal power plants (all of which can be mitigated with proper filtering). As for ruining pristine areas... I'm sorry, but what exactly is more important? A temporary pristine view which would be ruined at some point due to coal power plants... or a sustainable energy source (geothermal) which btw is renewable?

Geothermal is a good source of baseload power for a future with wind and PV, but will never dominate the energy consumption matrix.

Not to mention 9 times out of 10 it can ruin pristine geothermal areas (I live in NZ... it's bad here), and does actually emit pollutants, plus it is a finite resource.
