Deedee Morrison is a sculptor and installation artist with an affinity for the natural world. Her interest and respect for Mother Nature is evident in her sculpture, Sun-catcher, installed in the Cleveland Street District in Clearwater, Florida. As part of an art program for the community, Sun-catcher stands bright and tall in the middle of a busy section of retail shops. It’s long panels live up to its name with sunny yellow hues, but Morrison takes the sun theme one step further. Attached to the top of the sculpture are solar panels that literally power the sculpture at night.

Morrison finds inspiration in plants and natural light, and using these themes, couples them with a passion for technology and scientific advances. Sun-catcher is an intriguing combination of modern technique and natural beauty. She wanted to create a sculpture that reflected elements of nature yet was sustainable and useful to downtown Clearwater, and she chose solar power to do this. Mimicking the basic design strategies found in the natural world, Morrison melds the latest technology with one of our most basic elements, sunlight. The beautiful result is a remarkable creation that is environmentally friendly and useful to the public.

“This is the wonderful opportunity for a sustainable public art project along the islands in the Cleveland Street District,” says Deedee Morrison.
Standing fifteen feet tall, the frame is made of recycled aluminum and filled with lemon yellow Lucite panels. The pieces were laser jet cut and then solar panels were attached to the top to soak in the natural sunlight and convert it to power with a battery that sits inside the structure. At night, the sculpture radiates light, illuminating the street and adding another dimension to the Sun-catcher.

Morrison’s Sun-catcher is part of the Sculpture360 art program that strives to bring high-quality art to residents and visitors. The Public Art and Design Program conducts the art program in association with the Downtown Development Board of Clearwater, Florida every year. Shoppers can stroll amongst the series of sculptures and appreciate the art as part of their day. The sculpture series strives to make art accessible for everyone.
