Umm, if you "...live in any kind of massive city," there is likely public transportation available. And for long trips, the bus, the train or the plane. On the eco side, biofuel use is on the rise, particularly for trucks and buses. Biofuel is also coming for commercial airlines and it's being perfected by our military and NASA. I look forward to PVs on the top of electric city buses - more than sufficient space there, and yes, e. storage is available and solar tech now runs at night. Naysayers: don't bother trying to change my mind.
I can and do avoid "smart" phones, as they increase the likelihood of acquiring cancer. The most extensive emission of radiation comes from "smart" phones. The solution of course, is to use an earpiece. Still, I have no real need to do anything with a "smart" phone on the fly. Just because they are popular, doesn't mean everyone (nor even most people) actually need(s) one.
Actually, it's time for people to start thinking outside of the box/car (however powered) - even rented, shared, time-shared or otherwise.
