Some top solar project news from the past week (to go along with our two dozen or so solar energy stories):

The Lashto Fish Farm (photo courtesy of NRG Energy): The fish hatchery, operated by Caribbean Harvest, uses 63 PV panels (14,490 watts total) and a battery system to provide 24/7 power under normal weather conditions. This clean, renewable electricity runs the fish tank air filtration system, enabling increased production of tilapia and additional fish farming jobs that contribute to economic prosperity and food security for the region.

1. NRG Energy announced this week [PDF] that it has completed the first two solar energy projects in Haiti it committed to through the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). “President Bill Clinton and David Crane, President and CEO of NRG Energy (NYSE: NRG), toured several sites in Haiti’s Central Plateau.” NRG is putting $1 million into solar energy projects in Haiti. “These projects are being done in partnership with the Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF), a nonprofit organization that designs and implements solar energy solutions in developing countries, and include an additional $500,000 pledge from the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.” The first solar project is at a fish farm and “uses 63 PV panels (14,490 watts total) and a battery system to provide 24/7 power under normal weather conditions.” The other project is for solar rooftops on Haiti schools.

2. Premier Power Renewable Energy announced that “the construction of the 16.2MWp Zdravetz utility scale solar power plant in Bulgaria has started” this week. “The project is scheduled to be completed during second quarter quarter of 2012.”

3. Premier Power has also “finalized a $27.6 million agreement with Chaori Solar USA, an investment-focused subsidiary of Shanghai Chaori Solar Energy Science & Technology Co., to build high-performance, utility-scale solar power plants in the United States. Construction is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2012.”

4. PsomasFMG and NRG Solar have joined forces to work on “an initial portfolio of solar projects totaling over 11 megawatts (MW),” the companies announced this week. “The two largest projects are a 7.3 MW project for the William S. Hart School District in Santa Clarita, Calif., and a 3.3 MW project with the County of Orange, Calif. All of the projects include signed power purchase agreements with the facility owners to buy the solar-generated electricity.

5. The NBA’s Pheonix Suns now have an arena powered with 966 solar panels after “Phoenix and Arizona Public Service officials, NBA Phoenix Suns executives and point guard Steve Nash switched on 966 solar panels on the roof of US Airways Center parking garage on Monday.” Apparently, Nash is a big greenie. “Nash, who has been a spokesman for APS’ energy-saving campaigns since 2008, said the new project fits in with his personal beliefs and practices in protecting the environment and reducing energy waste. ‘I feel really proud whether at home or whether at work that solar energy is part of that commitment,’ Nash said.”

6. FRV and Denham Capital have teamed up “to invest over US$ 190 million in new solar energy projects across a broad range of geographies,” the companies announced this week. The projects will be in Australia, South Africa, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East.

7. GDT Tek “has executed an Energy Service Agreement (ESA) with a private wholesale company to purchase 20MW of power from its Desert Hot Springs, CA 109 Acre Solar Project,” GDT Tek announced yesterday. “GDT Tek recently closed escrow on 109 acres of prime solar farm property in Desert Hot Springs. The ESA states that the private company will purchase all electricity up to 20MW/hr and resell it to companies at a set wholesale price.”
