Instead of creating an entirely new car for electric and hybrid drivetrains (like the Volt and Prius), put the drivetrains in mainstream products (like the Camry, Highlander, Fusion, and Escape). By concentrating on entirely new cars to wrap around the drivetrain, the vehicle is more expensive and less appealing. Plus it leads to less diversity in what is available with the drivetrain.

They might also consider putting the efficient drivetrains in some of the bigger vehicles in the fleet like pickup trucks with work packages, in taxi-market vehicles, and medium duty trucks ... and SUVs.

Popularize the drivetrain without having to market an entire car.

My wife and I ruled out the Volt not just on cost (custom body) but on size (build a mid-sized or crossover Voltec-powered vehicle based with standard bodywork and my wife will jump to the front of the line)

You forgot to mention the little question of value for money.

I have a rational mind and a thirst for knowledge, but buying a new car has never made any sense. I'd hazard a guess that the market for second-hand EVs is somewhat limited.

Even with diesel in the UK approaching £6.50 a gallon, old technology is much cheaper for my low annual mileage and the occasional 150 mile drive is beyond any affordable BEV.

Wheras those with a brain and the thirst for knowledge don't need to be marketed to. If you haven't got your eye on an electric right now you're behind the 8 ball. Don't wait til its too late.
