When I was a kid (a long time ago) there was a 'commercial' with the idea that we enjoyed "Better Living Through Chemistry". I bought into it back then. These days I see it as, like petroleum itself, a mixed "blessing".

Coal and Oil have been the Energy Source that has allowed us to build (in a short order) the "civilization" that we now enjoy. They have also brought us the feedstock for our brilliant organic chemists who have concocted this substance that we call plastic.

Mixed Blessing: Yes, we have cars, trains, trucks, planes, plastics, fertilizers, pesticides and all sorts of petroleum driven "conveniences" that make our lives better. Along with those 'blessings' we have we have polluted air, water, increased disease, obesity, and a whole host of things that no one would call "better living".

Kudos to Ford for doing something even if it's simply a PR stunt as they have added to the dialogue. Though it's not a comprehensive 'answer' to our problems it is a step in the right direction. I'm beginning to wonder if there is an answer that would encompass every aspect of this 'pickle' into which we have delivered ourselves with our cleverness.

Do you have a plan?

This seems to be more of a stunt by Ford (a smart stunt!) than a true effort to use the millions of tons of plastic waste we make here. Wouldn't it be great if someone would legislate “a tax break” 50% or more recycled plastic from here is used in say... a new car!. This way we keep our new natural resource (plastic waste). Instead of crushing it and sending it to China, for them to use- why don’t we keep it here - recycle it here - use it here. It’s almost free. It would be great for everyone in the US. What do say?
