Electric cars are more expensive to purchase but less expensive to operate.

Gas/diesel cars are less expensive to purchase but more expensive to operate.

A $32,500 Nissan Leaf (without subsidies) will cost a bit less to own and operate over a 12 year vehicle lifetime than will a $20,000 30MPG gasmobile. A Prius hybrid is only slightly a better 12 year buy.

Over the next few years the price of EVs will drop and the price of fuel will rise. The scale will almost certainly tilt in the favor of EVs.
