I'd be curious to add another layer of complexity to this interesting phenomena: what is the prevailing wind direction? Don't most animals in nature, especially large grazers, have a tendency to face into the wind? So in addition to 'where is the food/water', these folks should be asking where is the wind?

Has the German scientists taken into a fact: cows may be orienting themselves in NS poisition to take maximum advantage of the sun's rays that fall along the EW axis? Perhaps to cool themselves. What Mathematical model has been suggested by these researchers to eliminate random behavior among aimless cows? Cattle magnets appear too small to influence cows to stand in a NS direction like a compass. I wonder what next? Brownian bulls and methane gas emission?

I was called the human compass by my survival camping buddies. I was able to find magnetic North day or night, sunny or snowing. The only time it did not work was when an electrical storm was approaching ( I was able to sense this before any rumbling could be heard) and also near EMP fields or areas of high ferric materials(magnetized or not). I was told it was due to the high magnetized ferric ions in my brain's frontal lobes. He said it was a genetic gift from my ancestors and combined with my high iron diet intake. I have since greatly reduced my iron intake and have lost much of this old world gift. Modern world and solar flares kicks out way too much EMP's, and dislike the disorientation effect it causes. This has been studied many years (decades) ago. Real scientist should start their research first by researching if research has not already been done before. Or its easier to get grant $$$$ than to do some real science research.
