If you're looking at a commuting bike what do you compare these to?

A 250cc bike that might sell for $4k to $5k and get 75MPG?

If so, then you're looking at about $640 per year for fuel (12,000 miles with $4/gallon gas). Maybe $150 for electricity.

$500 per year fuel savings plus (probably) no maintenance costs evens things out over ten years.

Maybe the comparison should be made with a bike with more displacement, the electric bikes will have a lot of torque and will likely ride smoother than a small engine bike.

That said, prices will drop as batteries are made in larger volume.
