So did the patent get published ?

I searched for Eden Full on Google patents but nothing turned up.

Also, surely an inventor can discuss their invention if the patent is submitted and pending, which must surely be the case if someone is shelling out $275k.

I am pretty sure that the patent will be hers and not some corporations (what bodes for the future of the patent we could only speculate poorly on).

You may be right about making it a public design, but I imagine that corporate power would make production much more difficult if it were not a patented design.

That said if its something that can be added to any solar panel, and made relatively easily with simple tools (which it sounds like it can).

I don't really know how its built though, so I could still only speculate poorly on how this will be brought effectively to those who need it the most.

If it's basically a bimetallic strip actuated device it would seem to me to be quite springy or wobbly. How will it fare in a heavy winds.

I design tracking mounts to 10 lbs per square foot, my local building code.

There have be dozens of bimetallic strip actuated solar trackers in the US patent data base. What makes this one unique?

Have you seen it?

Duane

Okay, using a piece of bamboo is cute, but I don't buy the "genius" in this. It's been done before, by a variety of methods... bimetallic strips, gas cylinders with pressure differentials (Mother Earth News, about 30 years ago), probably a half-dozen other ways that no one ever bothered to patent or bring to market.

[...] From CleanTechnica: Eden Full, a 19-year-old Princeton University mechanical engineering student has developed a non-toxic, cheap, recyclable device made out of metal and bamboo that allows solar panels to follow or track the Sun without the use of an electric motor.
Excellent. Solar tracking has been one of the constraints for wider use of Solar PV. Some researchers came out with an idea of utilising Sunflower plant biomimicking to design solar panels.
I heartily congratulate Eden Full, 19-year-old Princeton University mechanical engineering student for developing a non-toxic, cheap, recyclable device made out of metal and bamboo that allows solar panels to follow or track the Sun without the use of an electric motor.

I am happy that the youngsters are taking up research into problems that have wide applications in the field of Renewable Energy use.
