Cleanweb Hackathon Gets Underway in San Francisco

The first annual CleanWeb Hackathon is underway in San Francisco. For the next 24 hours (more or less, probably more) teams of programmers, designers, and business developers will work to create from scratch the next great app leveraging mobile technology, the social web, and sustainable business models to foster resource conservation, consumer awareness, efficiency, and sustainability.
Priti Ambani, editor at Ecopreneurist, posted earlier this week introducing the CleanWeb concept and David Anderson also has a post up on Inspired Economist.
A couple of days ago I spoke with Suchi Srinivasan, one of the hard-working volunteer organizers of the hackathon, for a brief “lay of the land” for the event. Participants will have access to numerous datasets for transportation, sustainability, demographics, energy, environment, geolocation, communication, and agriculture. Dataset providers include the EPA (making available what they call the “mother lode” of data), twilio, Tendril, CSRHub, Genability, Azure Data, Docusign, and many others.
Teams consist of 2-3 people, with an ideal team consisting of one programmer, one user interface designer, and one business developer. For an app to be judged, teams are required to take an idea from initial concept to demonstrable prototype. Teams will have three minutes to demonstrate their creations.
As I write this, teams are coalescing and discussing ideas, you can feel the creative energy in the room. Good things are happening!
