Helium is obtained as the by product of the liquifaction of natural gas. It will only run out when natural gas runs out and that is after all the oil is gone. There are vast reserves of Helium rich natural gas in Qatar, Siberia, Algeria and Australia. There are still some sources available in the US, although the old Helium stockpile (The Amarillo reserve) is being sold off as it is no longer required.

It is possible to float an airship with simply hot air so they will never be impossible. The disadvantage is that they would then require energy for their buoyancy. There are designs of Airships that are made like a huge solar air panel: Clear on the top with a target that heats the air inside.

Is anyone aware that helium is also a scarce finite resource with few known areas of reserves? Just how long does anyone think an airship industry could be viable?

Hi Folks,
The new hybrid air vehicles are amazing. They are not airships but a new class of aircraft designed to overcome the stability, control response and ground handling problems associated with traditional airships whilst keeping the benefits like fuel economy and safety.
