I gave up my car about 7 years ago and have never looked back. I love living without a car. But for those who need a little more incentive, the city of Murcia, Spain offered lifetime transit passes in June to residents who gave up their cars. Sounds like a great plan! Beyond the environmental, health, and economic benefits of such a policy, I imagine it would help to keep people in the city (a lifetime transit pass is a pretty nice perk). Here’s more on the story in Murcia Spain.

I of course meant to say ‘I have no ambition to own a car’

thanks. i thought so, but wasn’t sure. just edited it for you — never do so, but since you added the correction, i figured it was ok :D

Your story resonates with me. I’ve lived without a car for over 15 years now and have ambition to own a car. I lived in central Europe for a decade where public transport was excellent.
Here in Australia it’s a little harder but I live relatively close to a railway station. The 15 or so minute walk is good exercise. Mainly however I’m able to live on less income as I don’t have to keep up the constant costs of looking after a car. The traffic in Sydney especially is a nightmare which I’m more than happy to avoid. I do shop more frequently for groceries but luckily I live a short walk from a supermarket. My situation allows me to do this and I’m happy to do so.
