Off shore wind farms are expanding. US,China,South Korea,Taiwan are going in a big way to install offshore Wind Farms. Though the cable and installations costs are high compared to onshore,wind speeds on the sea will be more ,about 30 per cent. Since power is cube of velocity, with improved large wind turbines(above 5 MW),Offshore Wind farms will be cost competitive with nuclear and solar.
