It is unusual to see heads of companies spending money on renewables and not on 50,000 square foot energy sucking homes on the beach that get used two weeks out of the year (That sounded too bitter. I was trying to say something about their wasteful and self centered choices).

We are fortunate that the private sector is taking on this task of developing renewables, because the government is stretched way beyond capacity.

The Google Guys seem to be rather unique heads of major corporations. They've put a good portion of their vast wealth toward making a difference early on in their business careers rather than waiting until the end as have people like Bill Gates. (Or after they die like Steve Jobs?)

Left out of the list is their funding of Tesla. The Tesla Roadster completely changed people's opinions of electric vehicles. No longer were EV glorified golf carts. For a small fraction of the cost of an exotic sports car one could buy a significantly faster machine. And it had a 200+ mile range.

Also left out it their funding of NanoSolar. That was the company that convinced many that thin-film solar had a major role to play in PV. It has stumbled, seemingly due to poor second generation management, but it pushed the envelope and greatly helped us get past the $1/watt solar hurdle.

Oh, and they financed extensive geothermal exploration. These guys are OK in my book....
