Kite-powered ships are a natural extension of traditional sail design. The idea of combining a sail or kite with solar panels is certainly creative! Solar-powered craft are already plying the world's waters. As you read this, the 100-foot MS Turanor PlanetSolar has crossed the Atlantic, traversed the Panama Canal, and is well under way across the Pacific in its bid to be the first solar-powered vessel to circumnavigate the globe.

Now they're cruising on through the Marquesas. What a voyage!

Thank you, John. It should also be noted that larger ships can move greater quantities of freight more efficiently, so potentially container shipping can become not only the most energy efficient but also the least carbon-heavy method of transportation.
Just one thought regarding the CO2 emissions of container ships -- while it's true they emit a lot of CO2, it's also true that they emit far less than just about any other form of transportation. They have some of the most energy efficient diesel engines in the world. Compared to trucks, trains, or (gasp) planes, these ships are incredibly energy efficient. Making them even more efficient would certainly be great, but they're really not all that bad to begin with.
