Point taken. While there are different definitions for ‘biodiesel’, alkyl esters produced from plant/animal oils is the most accepted one.

That may “seem” logical to you, but biodiesel is defined as mono-alkyl esters, which the renewable diesel products most definitely are not. See: http://www.biodiesel.org/resources/definitions/

The company calls its product a ‘biofuel’ so calling it biodiesel seems logical. Additionally, even if the process is different the raw material is still biological in origin. The difference in the process is duly noted in the updated article.

The Neste plant makes “renewable diesel,” not biodiesel. They use a catalytic hydrotreating process, not esterification.
