"After this has been accomplished the team want to take the research one step further and develop plants which will extract the toxins from the water and store them in their leaves."

And what's going to keep the local fauna from eating those toxic leaves?

Walking on Mars may not symbolize the dilemma that we are facing in choices of future energy sources.

It is naive to think that naturally occurring substances other that oil and coal are not without negative consequences, or causing unforseen catastrophy.

I don't think that algae is a smart choice anyway. I feel the same way about food stuff, vegetation converted into ethenol, biodiesel.

Real solution begins with an all out effort to replace the ICE power plant with electrical power. Battery tech is rapidly developing toward eco-acceptability, while economical.

Real renewable energy sources as massive solar and wind (actually wind is "solar") associated with up to date grid system and home energy generation/savings can be the correct path into the future on the planet.

All that will not be enough though unless we rethink and redesign mobility around the idea of new liveable urbanism and fast public transportation systems.

There are lots of good ideas available already and more are on the way that should convince us to accept changes that actually will liberate us from our existing and growing socioeconomic conundrum.
