@jj - "If this new coal thing works out, I can see the nuclear and renewables getting pushed back again, so I am hoping it won’t work too well"

I don't think anyone is going to invest in coal if they can invest in renewable energy: even coal-fired electricity plants are converting to gas or biomass instead.

But for coal mining companies, this would be a way to end mountaintop removal and try something a bit cleaner.

Excuse me for remaining skeptical here. If we must use coal for a while longer then this is what we must do, but you know the coal industry has damned itself already for all their attacks on both the environment and on their AGW denials.

You know the Nuclear industry was damned too after 3 mile and that decline led directly to the growth of coal, no other choice at the time and we were ignorant. Now modern gen 3 and4 nuclear could come back and be much more efficient at using up the energy, even burn up the old waste. If this new coal thing works out, I can see the nuclear and renewables getting pushed back again, so I am hoping it won't work too well. Atleast we can hope for a complete stop to building conventional coal plants.
