NAVTEQ did produce this study, but the same idea applies for any live traffic data, including a crowd-sources alternative, provided live data is available in real time while commuters are in their vehicles

NAVTEQ produces proprietary map data. It is expensive, restricted, and often outdated.

openstreetmap.org is a “crowd-sourced” open alternative. We are mapping our world, from streets and houses to businesses, speedbumbps, public telephones, everything. The resulting data is usable by everyone for any purpose.

Because the resulting map data will be more complete and more up-to-date, even more resources will be saved.
