Actor William Shatner, known by us all as Captain Kirk in the original series of Star Trek, has launched a stinging attack on the green credentials of Hewlett-Packard, after leaving a company-wide voicemail message for staff at the firm’s HQ.
“This is William Shatner. You, HP, promised me a toxic free computer by 2009. Now my friends at Greenpeace tell me I will have to wait until 2011. What’s up with that?” he said.
However, in a sign that he hasn’t lost the diplomatic touch expected of a starship captain, Shatner pleaded HP staff to “Please ask your leader, Mark Hurd, to make computers that are free of toxic PVC plastic and brominated flame retardants just as Apple has done.”
The company has subject to sustained pressure from Greenpeace and other environmental groups for backpedalling on a 2007 commitment to eliminate harmful substances from its PCs by 2009.
The veteran actor closed his message by wishing HP employees an enjoyable day. But the question is, will HP manage to Klingon to its credibility after the incident or be forced to employ even more cloaking tactics?
