Eco-Friendly Rail for Disneyland and Anaheim
A model of clean technology and green building, a rail center planned for Anaheim, CA in 2013 will also provide a link to Disneyland. Taking design cues from NYC’s Grand Central Station, the building will also be a centerpiece of Anaheim and a site to see in itself.

Aptly named, since it is anticipated to be extremely climate friendly, the station will be called the ARTIC (Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center). The rail station is being designed to achieve LEED’s highest certification, platinum. According to reporters at JambleMag.com, “The shell of the building will be constructed with an expandable EFTE membrane - a material that expands and contracts to control natural light. It will also be fitted with photovoltaics and hot water heating cells.” HOK is the architecture firm who won the bid and they are committed to sustainable goals in building, technology and transportation. The vice president of HOK, Todd Osborne, states, “We’re getting the critical infrastructure in place where you can actually envision a day in the future where you can reliably get around without a car.”
This will be a $180 million project. It will be the region’s center for nearly all forms of transportation — intercity rail (Amtrak), regional rail, local buses, airport shuttles, taxis, and even connections to Disney’s monorails. The station is also supposed to be a critical high-speed rail link between northern and southern California in later stages.
The station is being modeled after traditional, magnificent rail stations like Grand Central Station but will also have a 21st century design feature of its own — no columns — that will allow and encourage people to look up at its 150ft high ceiling.
The project is expected to get underway early next year and be finished by 2013, but it will rely on federal funds and those are yet to be attained.
