While wind farms in the Great Lakes seem like a great idea, both the Canadian and U.S. governments should look at the total picture as it might affect the great North American flight paths of migratory birds. The huge off-shore wind project proposed for eastern Lake Ontario is in the same area as on-shore projects which are at this time being built, about to be built and planned for. That's just one end of one lake.

Migration routes must be taken into account in placement and planning of wind developments. We must be careful that a wall of turbines is not built along the Great Lakes. It is time for governments on both sides of the border to be cooperating with each other to address this issue.

It's about time someone started moving in this direction. I did some research in 2006-2007 on wind farms and remember thinking, "Gee, why don't they build them on the great lakes? Steady winds, reasonable depths, and no salt corrosion to deal with!" Nice to see someone else finally thought so too!

I hope they put a lot of thought into appropriate locations for turbines, considering storms on the lake can be quite violent and there is still a great deal of shipping through it.
