New Department of Energy regulations mandate that power companies and energy providers may not put any restrictions on the trade of energy i.e. selling your power back to the power company. Of course they can make you run a gauntlet as far as safety is concerned. The energy industry has a traded market just like the oil industry, and theoretically having a shed full of batteries could make you money if you downloaded at night and resold at peak hours.
