That's kind of a sweet idea, but wouldn't most roadside collectors just get debris on them and actually be harder to keep clean than say a large factory like installation?

If we had a national feed in tariff, as Germany has people would install solar panels by the millions. These would be distributed power and and the grid would need only minor changes.

The cool thing about solar energy producing technologies are that they can be installed anywhere from a flat piece of desert to a commercial rooftop, house rooftop even in parking lots on a pedestal (providing shade and producing electricity). This is a super Idea for many reasons I think. Not only do you preserve the untouched areas ( building a road there was intrusion enough) by building next to the existing road you don't go tearing through the countryside, as for the grid that needs updated, there are currently 3 grids in the USA East, West and well Texas has one to itself basically all these situations create jobs, we need that and it doesn't need to take 15 - 20 years to get somewhat off the ground we can blow this out the water, China style, in a hurry if everyone gets with the program. it means health, jobs, security COME ON BOYS n GIRLS!!!

Great article!

Why put 'em over any land at all? Why not put 'em directly over the highway - similar to covered bridges. Roads, vehicles and their drivers, contrary to custom, do not need sunlight directly overhead. Putting panels over dirt just creates one more rain run-off problem.

In my area we have several very long dual bridges over water bodies. Most already have some small solar for lights/communications. As I crossed one the other day, for 30 miles, I visualized panel running between the bridges. There is already conduits that lead to major communities on both side and are high enough that they haven't been impacted by hurricane surges. As these are public facilities there would not be any tax advantage unless Feed in Meter policy is established as done throughout Europe and currently under development in Gainesville, Fl.. Another added benefit if done properly, the fisherman would love them as they also provide shade and enhanced marine habitat.

This is the best news yet. We are fighting companies trying to put Transmission lines through our beautiful environmentally sensitive area. These are so dangerous and it is to bring energy from the windfarms, that have been over built , and purposefully kept under the rug from the general public. We'd like to see more solar so you don't have these 150 ft high towers distroying the land. Please get the word out and thanks!!!!!!!!!

How about using the traffic to create the energy. I have seen several articles that show businesses using a sub floor system to generate electricity, why would this not work on busy roads?
