LG Releasing Sunlight-Illuminated LCD Display
Next month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is shaping up to be an interesting event. A few days ago, we reported that Energizer plans on debuting its solar-powered battery charger at the show. Now LG has announced the CES debut of its sunlight-illuminated 14.1 inch LCD notebook panel.

LG’s panel features an adaptive backlight that switches from transmissive to transreflective mode with the click of a button. The panel’s transreflective display— made for outdoor use— reflects sunlight to illuminate itself from the inside.
The company says that its transreflective mode provides a clear view of the screen display (the contrast ratio is 9:1)—and reduces power consumption by up to 75%.
Transreflective panels aren’t new, but LG’s product is the first to provide the option to easily switch back and forth between display modes.

Very interesting news, but I sure would like to know how much LG is charging for its screens. This story needs more details.
The first product? The One Laptop Per Child XO, which has been switching from transmissive to transreflective for the last two years…and at 200dpi.
Lisa - I wish I had some more details as well! I should have an update for you after CES in January.
How long will it be before these things are in the shops? As Toby says OLPC had them ages ago, so why can’t they be marketed through ordinary channels?
And if LG are going to be the only people selling them, what about also selling an auxillary screen that can be plugged into any other make of laptop when one wants to use same in the garden (This would not need to be “switchable”. It could be “sunlight-only”)
