Avocent Offers New Energy Solutions for IT Management
Earlier this week, Avocent, an IT operations management company, launched three new products that will make it incredibly easy for IT managers to keep track of their energy usage. The product that I find most interesting is the intelligent power distribution unit (iPDU), a device that works with Avocent’s existing DSView 3 Power Manager software. The iPDU lets IT managers know the exact amount of power being consumed by a device plugged into any given outlet.
One of Avocent’s other new products is the LANDesk Management Suite, an updated version of existing software that allows IT managers to experiment with different power consumption policies to see their financial impact.
I’ve had the chance to take a look at screenshots of the software, and it’s very intuitive. You can even find out exactly how much money you’re saving by adjusting your power usage if you know the cost per KW of your energy.
Avocent’s third product release this week is a line of low-cost power strips that includes software for consolidated management.
All of these products are unique in their field and will be a tremendous boon to the IT management sector. “We’re pretty excited about this,” said Marty Jackson, Avocent’s Director of Corporate Strategy. “Power management affects an entire organization. If you’re an insurance agency with thousands of laptops, you need to understand power consumption and its effects. This allows you to understand your business.”

This is terrific. I’m going to look into this more, because until businesses adopt clean energy solutions, it’s going to be very difficult to reach the economies of scale needed to bring unit prices down for many products.
Once businesses realize the “going green” means having more green in their pockets, the changeover to clean technologies will be a downhill slope.
Obviously, this is a conservation measure, but I think it could open many people’s eyes to what a serious issue energy is in business and life.
I agree, Brian. This is a great way for businesses to use energy conservation to their advantage - and I think that emphasizing the monetary advantages of conservation is the only way it will become common practice.
