We just bought a reel mower. As a family, we are trying to find every way we can to maintain our lifestyle, yet be environmentally friendly. Our yard is 120' by 120'. All of us (even our 3 teenagers) have decided that it is definitely worth switching. It takes a little getting used to but our yard is looking great. It's quiet and no emissions and no gas. When I was a child, my family had a reel mower, but this new one we bought at Home Depot is much better. I would definitely recommend that everyone give it a try.

My father once brought home a reel mower - it was probably 1974, right after the Arab Oil Embargo helped initiate a quadrupling of world oil prices from $2.80 to $11.00 per barrel.

We lived in South Florida and had a yard full of a grass called St. Augustine. I was a very fit 14 year old (competitive swimmer) who cut several yards every week for spending money. After about ten feet of struggle against the very thick bladed St. Augustine, I told Dad that he had made a big mistake. He tried to prove me wrong, but he only lasted 4 feet before agreeing.

Reel mowers work okay in fine grasses like ryes, but I do not recommend them if you have a lawn with thick bladed grass or one full of broad leaved weeds like my current one. Instead, I highly recommend a good mulching mower with a moderate sized engine that can run for 5-6 hours on a gallon of fuel.
