I use gas tankless water heater for several months for hot water and heating. Frugal really scary, but in the summer when no heating and are therefore not work continuously, when you put the water you must wait between 5 and 10 seconds to warm up.

David:

Thanks for the link! Definitely something people should take into account when they're buying a water heater. Unfortunately, I wasn't surprised when I read this. But that just means there's room for improvement.

Michael:

Excellent! I'm sure lots of people will appreciate your advice and DIY info.

I have gas fired tankless water heaters at my home, my office and at 3 of our rentals. We now have them working well, but we encountered a number of issues when installing them.

I’ve put up this page explaining some of the installation issues we encountered, and how to avoid them:

Wonderful site and very balanced and informative info.

I strongly suggest you go to the DOE site

www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=new_specs.water_heaters

and read the comments. The DOE's final criteria for Energy Star ratings for water heater, which is referred to in your report, does not come close to meeting the recommendations of very respected entities including the Lawrence Berkley National Labs to correct the flawed testing that has produced invalid energy efficiency for gas tankless water heaters since

1998. This is discussed by many who aren't tied to the gas special interest even the California Energy

Commission. See also the Edison Electric Institute,

TVA and Microtherm,Inc. comments.

We all deserve better.

Thanks

Great article. You took the yawn-factor out of the hot water heater. Amazing!
